^"23The Spirit makes us sure about what we will be in the future. But now we groan silently, while we wait for God to show that we are his children. This means that our bodies will also be set free. ²⁴And this hope is what saves us. But if we already have what we hope for, there is no need to keep on hoping. ²⁵However, we hope for something we have not yet seen, and we patiently wait for it. ²⁶In certain ways we are weak, but the Spirit is here to help us. For example, when we don't know what to pray for, the Spirit prays for us in ways that cannot be put into words. ²⁷All of our thoughts are known to God. He can understand what is in the mind of the Spirit, as the Spirit prays for God's people. ²⁸We know that God is always at work for the good of everyone who loves him. They are the ones God has chosen for his purpose, ²⁹and he has always known who his chosen ones would be. God's Love

³¹What can we say about all this? If God is on our side, can anyone be against us? ³²God did not keep back his own Son, but he gave him for us. If God did this, won't he freely give us everything else? ³³If God says his chosen ones are acceptable to him, can anyone bring charges against them? ³⁴Or can anyone condemn them? No indeed! Christ died and was raised to life, and now he is at God's right side, speaking to him for us. ³⁵Can anything separate us from the love of Christ? Can trouble, suffering, and hard times, or hunger and nakedness, or danger and death? ³⁶It is exactly as the Scriptures say, "For you we face death all day long. We are like sheep on their wayto be butchered."

³⁷In everything we have won more than a victory because of Christ who loves us. ³⁸I am sure that nothing can separate us from God's love--not life or death, not angels or spirits, not the present or the future, ³⁹and not powers above or powers below. Nothing in all creation can separate us from God's love for us in Christ Jesus our Lord!"

Australian Lutheran World Service Update

Thank you to those who have supported ALWS - here is the latest update - scary stuff:

"Greetings from Nairobi. I'm here with an ALWS team en route to South Sudan. We had hoped to visit Dadaab Refugee Camp, but the security situation means that is not possible. Your prayers are urgently requested because our Lutheran team (and other aid agencies) are facing many challenges. Yesterday a UNHCR vehicle was hit by a remote-controlled explosive, while on the way to Dadaab. This follows a number of other attacks, and means 'normal' aid work cannot continue for the moment in camp. Particularly at risk are our surveyors opening up new plots of land for shelters, and teachers going out into the community. The phone-call with the news of the attack came through as I was interviewing our Program Coordinator in Dadaab, Lokiru Matendo. He says this puts security at the Critical Level. Staff are scared, and prayers are requested for safety and a peace solution. What's amazing is that emergency lifesaving care is still being given. The Lutheran motto here is "We go where others stop". The practical evidence of this is that despite the danger a Lutheran team will continue going out into the camp at 8 each morning, and monitor the condition of refugees. The team prepare a report for each aid agency on any issues that may affect their sector (water, latrines etc), so they can be solved. This is incredible courage, and comes from a passion to help the people. Lokiru said:"It's not just a job - you want to address the suffering. Whatever little you can do, you do, to make a difference." This is typical of the attitude of all the team delivering your care to these people who have lost so much. Please know your help is noticed and appreciated here. We visited AusAID in Nairobi yesterday, and they were amazed at what we Lutherans have been able to do. The Lutheran World Federation team say the same. Lokiru summed it up: "We feel connected with the people of Australia through ALWS." This is you standing side-by-side with Lutheran teams as they minister to people who have lost everything.

You may have been too busy doing your assignments to notice that the world ended on 21 October 2011 harold-camping's (very false) prophecy.
Here is (in total ) an excellent article by Ronnie McBrayer which I think puts end time predictions in their rightful place.

Ronnie says:

"The End of the World As We Know It

I don’t know how it is that you are reading this. In fact, I don’t know how any of us are even here. In case you missed it, the entire cosmos was destroyed by the avenging judgment of God this weekend, and you can’t plead ignorance – you were properly warned.

Oh, forget the cryptic evidence of the Jewish prophets, the predictions of Nostradamus, the ancient Mayan Calendar, or the inexplicable visions of the Apostle John on the Isle of Patmos. No, for the last several years we have been advised by radio broadcaster and prophet Harold Camping that the end was near, and now overdue.

If that name sounds familiar, it should. Harold Camping was convinced – and so were many of his followers, some spending their life’s savings to warn their wayward neighbors – that the end of the world would arrive this past May. When that did not occur, Camping amended his prophecy with a gargantuan amount of imagination and interpretive gymnastics, giving the universe a drop-dead date of October 21, 2011.

It really doesn’t bother me when the end-times prophets and Harold Campings of the world show up with their placards, tracts, broadcasts, and sandwich boards of doom. It used to rally get under my skin, but now I recognize such predictions as an eccentric Christian tradition, one of those family customs that cannot be stopped, only endured.

The winds of world upheaval begin to blow and spiritual forecasters likewise begin to paint pictures with the terrible brush strokes of God’s consuming fire. Sinners are threatened. The blatantly unrepentant are dangled over the inferno. There is a frenzied relish to it all, some doomsdayers seemingly more happy to see all reprobates burn, than to move on to eternal bliss.

So when a radio preacher misfired once again on his prediction, it was just more of the same, and just as Jesus said it would be. “No one knows the day or the hour,” Jesus loudly proclaimed. The expiration date set for the universe is knowledge that belongs exclusively to God, and he doesn’t seem interested in sharing it with Harold Camping or anyone else who fancies making bold prophecies.

Further, as wrong as these would-be-prophets are about actual dates, their divination seems to also distract them from the nature of the end of the age. “Look, I am making everything new!” God says in the end (See Revelation 21). The cosmos doesn’t conclude with retribution, but with renewal. The final chapter is not extinction, but transformation. That is our Blessed Hope.

Simply, God believes in and loves his creation in a way that no televangelist or talking-head prophet can ever come close. God has bigger and better plans for his world than just throwing it into the intergalactic trash can. In the words of C.S. Lewis, “We may be tired of this world, but God isn’t.” He has great things in store, and we get the chance to get in on it and live it beginning today. This is a far better approach to life than pining for a fictitious apocalypse.

My Hebrew friends will have to forgive me for simplifying one of their marvelous parables, but there is a story in the Jewish literature about an old man who planted a fig tree. When asked if he really expected to live long enough to eat fruit from that tree, the old man laughed and said: “I was born into world that had fruit ready to eat. My ancestors planted trees for me, and now I plant fruit for my grandchildren.”

We can’t give up on the world because it’s not what we wish it was, or because we think it’s all going down the drain with no time left, or because some crackpot makes a bold but foolish prediction. What we call the “end” is not the end at all. True to his nature, God has not given this world a drop-dead date. Instead, it has been stamped with a renewal date, a date we pray and work for until it finally comes."

Alcohol and The Bible

Alcohol has been a big part of Australian celebrations for better or worse for many years. Some countries and religions forbid the consumption while others seem to flow with the liquid in their drinking water. What does the Bible say?

Most secular Australians would think that the Bible "tut tut's" it due to the temperance movement of days gone by. The reality - and most Aussie Lutherans know this - is that the Bible includes alcohol as one of God's gracious gifts along with food, sunshine, rain and good friends.

At the same token - alcohol - is like fire; good servant- horrible master.

Our Lutheran Church in Australia has an official stance for clarity sake - here is one paragraph from it - the rest can be found in the link underneath:

"We live in a society where it is customary to drink alcoholic drinks, and where social
drinking is approved because of the release it permits to an individual. It is used in
religious ritual, at ceremonies marking birth, marriage, death, celebrations in everyday
life. It reduces tensions and helps people to mix easily in society. Used in moderation,
its undoubted social usefulness is not accompanied by any serious ill effects.
However, alcohol which is a boon to many is a scourge to other members of our
society as some people find it difficult to take alcohol in moderation and develop an
addiction to it, with serious physical and mental consequences. Increasing
consumption of alcohol increases the likelihood of experiencing health and other
problems, even in those who may not be regarded as suffering from alcoholism. The
effect of alcohol is dose related, although it is marginally influenced by other factors,
eg when taken with meals."

In summary - if you choose to be someone who 'has a few drinks' and you stay 'under the legal limit' of drinks (and are of adult age) - in this society, that is fine you do no wrong.

There are however, many trappings that come with the "Australian drinking culture" which are foolish and I'd encourage you to stay right away from that.

Here's passage from Proverbs - written a few thousand years back - which is just as applicable today from Proverbs Chapter 23 - I bet you know someone just like this!

chaplaincy in schools

Legally - there may well be a constitutional reason to stop funding for chaplaincy in schools and so be it - if that is what the high court decides.

However, we will only find out later this year. I'm telling you upfront that I'm for chaplains in schools, so I'm not going to pretend otherwise - as long as they are kept accountable and stick to their mandate. I personally know a few school chaplains who are funded by this program and they are impressive, caring, rational and skilled people...not crazy fanatical religious zealots shoving King James Bible's sideways down the throats of unsuspecting students...I have seen and heard of valuable work done by these people. So, I am biased from experience and make no apologies.Having said that - I think I know why the 'secular' side is upset.They feel like they have been sabotaged by 'government funded' religious people on the campuses of their vulnerable children. You can feel the anger of the 'secular' public in the comments to the YouTube videos and articles. Fair enough.

Some people obvioulsy not too phased by the prediction....

The positive side, is that for some of us, it made us think about our mortality and 'what if' we knew we going to die within 24 hours. It's sometimes a healthy excercise to put things into perspective.

Money

"He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves abundance with its income" (Ecclesiastes 5:10).

A successful businessman once confided in another businessman known for his wisdom. "I've made a lot of money. I will soon be able to retire comfortably and do just about anything I want."
"John," the wise businessman replied to the man, "I've noticed that every time someone thinks they've built a tree that is so tall it almost reaches heaven, God often decides to shake the tree."
The minute we start trusting in riches, God will, in fact, "shake the tree" to demonstrate who is the source of wealth to turn us back to trusting Him completely. He did it in my life, and He'll do it in your life too because He loves us too much to allow us to continue down this destructive path.

Money is mentioned more than 2,000 times in the scripture. Jesus used it many times in illustrating an important lesson to his disciples. He spoke often of being a good steward of the resources He entrusted to us. He wanted a return on His investment and He wanted us to stay away from making money an idol in our lives.
Jesus understood that He was here on earth only to do the will of the Father. "I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; He can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does."

As we look at our relationship to our heavenly Father and our use of money, it is clear that we, like Jesus, are here to do the will of the Father in all areas of life. This means seeking to live a life that is totally yielded to His purposes -even in the financial area.
Money, independence, and security are often the reasons many start their own businesses or change jobs. Check your motives today and see if your financial life can stand Jesus' scrutiny. Are you operating as a steward of the financial resources He has entrusted to you?

No doubt there will be more to come....but...as I write this, Osama Bin Laden has reportedly been shot dead by US and, well, 'buried at sea'.

On face value it is 'good news' for those who had suffered under his atrocities - and I don't want to minimise that- but there is a lot that I see and hear that leaves me uncomfortable too. I'm no fan of Bin Laden nor of any violence. And at this stage I'm not sure what I think of the reaction of the world at large. I only hope that good can out of this and not more evil.

Who are you

Who are you?

You know who you are, don’t you? Isn’t that an obvious question? Of course you know who you are.

I spoke to an older person this week who only just discovered that they were adopted. I don’t know the whole story; but I could imagine that they will be questioning a lot of assumptions about who they are, where they came from and what this actually means for them now.

My own family have being trying to find out more about some of our not-so-far ancestors. Each discovery sheds new light on where we ‘came from’. Unfortunately for me, my ancestors fought on the “wrong side” of World War One and World War Two. So, as an Australian, I’m very proud of the Anzacs but their allies were shooting (and also killed) my relatives. I’m also basically a pacifist which makes this interesting - but that’s where I have come from - whether I like it or not.

So, who are you?
You might come from families with wonderful and proud reputations or families with ‘things’ that you would prefer not to be true, wished weren’t true.

Does this affect your identity? Well, yes it does. The ‘who you are’ also changes as the years go by. I still mostly ‘feel’ about younger than I actually am but I ‘look’ more my age. My face is starting to sag like a bloodhound and is gradually heading south. So the question of ‘who am I?’ is constantly in flux.

As you go through university, you are challenged with new thoughts and ideas and the ‘what do I believe’ thoughts get challenged. And so it should – that’s how we learn. What you believed is tied closely to the ‘who am I’ question.

Our identity and beliefs are in change and that is a fact of life. It gets uncomfortable at times.

On the swishing seas of existence I have found the best anchor, really, is faith in God who does not change. Keep receiving the gift of a relationship with him because he is always the same. Keep coming back to him again and again:

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. (Hebrews 13:8)

I the LORD do not change (Malachi 3:6)

Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
(Psalm 92:2)

So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in Him, rooted and built up in Him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness" (Colossians 2:7).

Atheist charts and hearts

Well, I've got to hand it to them. Those Atheists have gone and done it again. They've come out with a really good chart called "Rational Debating". Their motivation is to show how non-rational Christianity and other religious foolishness is (see original article here), but I personally actually really like the chart as a guide to rational discussion. Have a look: (or the full size chart here)

Obviously, I DO believe in God, and don't go for Atheism, but the 'sharpness' of this sort of thinking is good in any human discussion or debate. A word of warning - don't try this out on your partner at home or members of your family, if you know what's good for you.

My one point of contention with the chart, as good as this chart is in theory, I'm not sure how well it actually works in real life when discussing 'god' or 'non-god'. I don't know about you, but any conversations I've had with Atheists do not start with -either party; not me Christian, or them the Atheist - asking ourselves in all honesty "Can you envision anything that will change your mind on this topic". I don't think that is "reality". An Atheist has already declared that they have no intentions of believeing in God by calling themsleves an Atheist; so how can they approach an argument envisioning anything that will change their mind on the topic? I find that a bit rich. If an Atheist really truly came to me with an attitude of 'maybe I can learn something new from Christianity', well that would be a first for me.

The other problem I have with the chart is that in reality, rationality is not everything. We live our lives in complex relationsips with other people, our enviroment and indeed ourselves. I applaud rational thinking for keeping some sort of sanity in the world - and don't get me wrong, rational thinking is ...very, very, very... important, but - and this is where we most likely part ways - rational thinking is not everything. What do I mean? Well, this is where some will roll their eyes but I'm asking for a bit of honesty:

Deep down inside of us is somone or something - whatever you want to call it, the real you -who feels strongly, who has passions, who has intuition that 'knows' things without being able to explain it in 'rational' ways, who has a sense that there must be 'more than this', who feels joy and sorrow who longs for connection and a strange feeling that they are actually worth more than a pile of transitory dust...

Some will balk at this as sentimentalism and being delusional. Leave this to church freaks and old ladies and their myths... But then again, when -you - are alone during those quiet times with no distractions, no other people around, no noise - what is your deepest heart of hearts telling you? Surely we are not all brain and no heart? What's going on in your heart? Do you ever sense something going on in there that can't be explained in dot points and diagrams?

Finally, Christianity is not ultimately a rational argument - it is about a relationship: From The Bible (1 Corinthians 1:20 - 24) "What happened to the ones who think they have all the answers? Didn't God show that the wisdom of this world is foolish? God was wise and decided not to let the people of this world use their wisdom to learn about him. Instead, God chose to save only those who believe the foolish message we preach. Jews ask for miracles, and Greeks want something that sounds wise. But we preach that Christ was nailed to a cross. Most Jews have problems with this, and most Gentiles think it is foolish. Our message is God's power and wisdom for the Jews and the Greeks that he has chosen. Even when God is foolish, he is wiser than everyone else, and even when God is weak, he is stronger than everyone else. "

Uh, so where was God?

For those of us in Australia, summer has been full of one natural disaster after another. Quite frankly - from my point of comfort in Adelaide - it has sucked big time. If I was in flooded or cycloned Queensland, flooded NSW, VIC and parts of SA I wouldn't have time to pontificate here because I would be on pure survival level. Same with the people who lost their houses in fires in Western Australia. So where was God? On holiday? Doing the dishes? Or did he cause it? Are the elements more powerful then him? What's going on?

I'll tell you up front - that I won't be able to answer the big question of human suffering because from my understanding - no one has sufficiently answered it anyway. I'll also tell you now that I believe we are told not to judge people unfairly,however, we -are- to give of ourselves to help others, to pray for good to come out of bad situations, to comfort each other and to go back to the basic hopes we have has believers.

Look at these two articles under the links 'Lived' & 'Died' both in similar circumstances. Why did one person get saved in a nick of time, the other lost? Have a look:

If theologically you try to impose some sort of judgment on the situation, I'd say you have rocks in your head. The boy who was 'lost' - helped his brother -knowing he may well be sacrificing his own life...which is what happened. This is a 'Christ like' action, not stupidity or sin; but doing good - and so there is no rhyme or reason, no cause and effect. No sense. We do not know and I suspect God is not going to tell the bulk of us either.

Tory Shepherd, who I'm guessing is an Atheist or Agnostic at least, wrote an article in "The Advertiser" newspaper poo-pooing Church leaders who "flounder when they try to explain God's role in tragedy". You can read the article here. Though I would differ on the third
conclusion that possibly "God does not exist", I found the article refreshing in identifying - I believe -flawed Christian mottos that I don't think are helpful or indeed even true by biblical principals.

(1) God is in the rescue effort...maybe he is... but the obvious question is why did he make the mess in the first place? It doesn't make sense. Another point is that it is not only Christians helping other people in the rescue missions but people of all faiths and , dare I say, some Atheists too! Does God work through Atheists? Hmmmmm? (I'm not going to attempt to answer that one)

(2) God was in the miracles. Most major catastrophes have their 'miracle' stories. And God may well be working in some peoples lives to 'save' them from the jaws of death. I actually believe in God's ability to perform miracles - why wouldn't I, Jesus Christ performed many miracles? However, I don't think any of us are in a position of declaring any theological judgments. If Someone was saved through a miracle. We are thankful. If not, we don't know why. We cry with their loved ones. That's it.

(3) The devil caused it. The devil is not in the same league as God the Creator of the universe. Enough said.

Conclusions (according to the article by TS):
(A) "God caused the floods because he is righteous and thought the people deserved it"
(B) "God did not stop the floods and is therefore either complicit or not all powerful"
(C) "Or: God does not exist"

My personal response - at this stage of my life - is that I do believe God exists. So I'd smudge out (c). I do believe God is all powerful, so I can't go for the second point of (b).
I think for many of the disasters that are mentioned in the Bible, God often sent a prophet ahead pre-warning the people that he was going to bring disaster if they did not repent of their wicked ways (and by wicked - it was fairly serious). I do not remember hearing a prophecy about the coming disaster. If there was one - please tell me. So, I don't go for (a). Incidentally, I don't go for (a) either because it gets some Christians smug that obviously they are more righteous.

I would have to agree than with (B) "God did not stop the floods and is therefore ... complicit"

You say "how can you say that!?", Well - it seems to me that is exactly what the Bible says.

We don't know why he allows natural disasters. That's his business. To make judgments on the "big picture" of his dealings - is his domain. If you are a Christian - we've been told to look after each other practically, emotionally. To have faith in him that he does actually love each one of us and ultimately wants the best for us. Nowhere in the Bible are we told that it would be an 'easy ride'. Have a read of some of the Psalms, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes , some of the sayings of Jesus, the lives of the prophets and the apostles...pain and tragedy is part of our mortal existence. We trust in his ultimate 'rescue' of us but before then we will have many unanswered questions.

Many Christian leaders have called for donations and long term practical care and prayer. That's something we -do - know about and can control. And for those who are ready to hear, they may also get to know the God who 'so loved this world that he gave his only son' who also suffered. It's so left field that it doesn't make sense - but it changes lives.

Charles Haddon from "Ou Est Le Swimming Pool" took his own life in August 2010. I don't know what else was going on in his life but the news stories tell us that the 'trigger' was when he accidently seriously hurt a fan in a stage dive....

Mary Mackillop

Australia has it's first 'Saint' and I think it's a great thing because Mary Mackillop is such a great example of a Christian lady who showed incredible bravery, compassion and dedication. Virtues that are a possibly little thin at the moment in many quarters of our land. I think she deserves out due respect.

Without raining on her truly justified parade - I just want to point out a few things that to me are not based in the New Testament about this 'Saint' stuff...

*We can pray directly to God and don't need to pray through 'Saints' (it's all through the New Testament - but read Hebrews 10 for starters) In fact it's probably NOT a good idea to pray through a Saint, when Jesus has already opened the door for you to God.

* ALL Christians are declared 'Saints' in the New Testament - often the letters to the churches (in the Bible) open with 'to the saints' (eg When Paul wrote to the church in Ephesus he started out "Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints in Ephesus, the faithfulin Christ Jesus...")

Having clarified that - Mary Mackillop, though human - is a great example to follow in many ways.

Martin Luther said this about 'Church declared Saints', that they can be honored in three ways:

1.By thanking God for examples of His mercy

2. By using the saints as examples for strengthening our faith

3. By imitating their faith and other virtues

Having Mary Mackillop as an example is a fresh change from the many tinsel town heroes that are shoved down our throats with sugar coating and little substance. Congratualtions, Mary of the Cross : )

Will the real Jesus stand up?

"The cattle are lowing
The poor Baby wakes
But little Lord Jesus
No crying He makes"

Ah, excuse me? "No crying he makes?" no crying? A baby? I don't think so.

This is a great example of the New Testament Jesus being covered up with (Christian) religious sentimentality. "Away in a Manager" is a great Christmas Carol but like many portryals of Jesus, it is just plain untrue. The Bible has always portrayed Jesus as someone who suffered like we have even though he was God on earth.

So not only would he have cried like any other baby, he also would have added to the stable stench with his own nappy /diaper filling. Try singing that in a carol this Christmas.

Later in life he hurt and ached and suffered like the rest of us. Here are a few words directly from the Bible:

"He had to be one of us...Jesus has suffered and was tempted, he can help anyone else who is tempted." (Hebrews 2:17 -18)

"For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. " (Hebrews 4)

"...and asked, "Where have you put his body?"
They replied, "Lord, come and you will see."
Jesus started crying, and the people said, "See how much he loved Lazarus." (John 11)

"When Jesus came closer and could see Jerusalem, he cried ..." (Luke 19)

and so on...

The thing that really bothers me about the 'sanitising' of Jesus Christ is that I suspect people who have not read the New Testament for themsleves get this namby pamby picture of Jesus who has been basically 'photoshopped' & 'airbrushed' into a gentle distant religious figure that has no relation to our everyday life.

I dare anyone who has that view of Jesus to read through any of the Gospels - in one sitting, like you would read a short book. Also, use a current translation in a a language you speak at home.

Take your pick - pick up a Bible and read one of the Gospel books in the Bible (you can read them in a couple of hours) either Matthew, Mark, Luke or John and ask yourself honestly if this is the Jesus that is often presented as "little Lord Jesus No crying He makes"

The Paradoxical Commandments

I've never seen myself as a 'natural' leader, I'm a little too eccentric for that; but over the years I've grown to appreciate (and hopefully learn from) leaders who understand Jesus' 'servant-leader' model.

I found this little bit of prose (by Dr. Kent M. Keith) and thought it was worth putting here because my experience confirms it:

The Paradoxical Commandments

People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered.
Love them anyway.
If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
Do good anyway.
If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies.
Succeed anyway.
The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.
Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.
Be honest and frank anyway.
The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds.

Our view of politicians and what the Bible says

As much as it might hurt....your vote does count - so do it intelligently and prayerfully!

Here are a few passages from The Bible that spell out our attitute to our leaders - whoever they might be.

(Please note: the political climate was much more volitile when these were written, which makes the statements even more powerful)

Pray for politicians

1 Timothy 2

"How To Pray. First of all, I ask you to pray for everyone. Ask God to help and bless them all, and tell God how thankful you are for each of them. Pray for kings and others in power, so that we may live quiet and peaceful lives as we worship and honour God. This kind of prayer is good, and it pleases God our Saviour."

Don't break the law

Romans 13

Obey Rulers. Obey the rulers who have authority over you. Only God can give authority to anyone, and he puts these rulers in their places of power. People who oppose the authorities are opposing what God has done, and they will be punished. Rulers are a threat to evil people, not to good people. There is no need to be afraid of the authorities. Just do right, and they will praise you for it. After all, they are God's servants, and it is their duty to help you. If you do something wrong, you ought to be afraid, because these rulers have the right to punish you. They are God's servants who punish criminals to show how angry God is. But you should obey the rulers because you know it is the right thing to do, and not just because of God's anger. You must also pay your taxes. The authorities are God's servants, and it is their duty to take care of
these matters. Pay all that you owe, whether it is taxes and fees or respect and honor.

Let love be your only debt! If you love others, you have done all that the Law demands. In the Law there are many commands, such as, "Be faithful in marriage. Do not murder. Do not steal. Do not want what belongs to others." But all of these are summed up in the command that says, "Love others as much as you love yourself." No one who loves others will harm them. So love is all that the Law demands. "

On rare occasions you may have to choose between obeying God or obeying your leaders (make sure you are right first!) and be prepared for the backlash

What can seperate us from God's love?

During these heavy times of assignments and exams you probably don't want any more words ...but I'd like to give you a bit of perspective of the bigger picture.

Let's assume the following verses are really true ...and see what that means for us in the middle of all the annoyance, panic and bother and other overloaded feelings you are probably going through:

In everything we have won more than a victory because of Christ who loves us.

I am sure that nothing can separate us from God's love--not life or death, not angels or spirits, not the present or the future, and not powers above or powers below.

Nothing in all creation can separate us from God's love for us in Christ Jesus our Lord!

From Romans chapter 8 in the Bible

What can separate us from God's love; apparently ...nothing...that includes work, study and exams. Take heart!

I'm going to use the word "secks" here so that some of your internet filters don't block this article.

You who are reading this may have a different opinion to what I'm writing but please reflect on it. I respect that you are adults and can live life how you choose. This is my opinion at this time:

...and no matter what side of the argument you are on - the verse I took from Romans 12 is a reminder that:

(a) We do have choices - it's ultimately up to you what you do

(b) God - who made your body - actually does have a preference in how you use it - so don't let anyone tell you that he shrugs his shoulders and doesn't care.

(c) You body IS connected to your spiritual life - there is no separation of body and soul in this life. What you do in your body is a reflection of your soul - and what you do with your body will effect your spiritual life - so take care of yourself and others.

(d) If you have problems with what God wants you to do - he is OK with you discussing it with him - in fact we are often encouraged to pray to God ... even if we disagree with Him.

Let's not forget who invented this whole 'secks' thing - and let it be known that God is not a wowser - his creation is very rich and varied and mysterious...it is not something cheap - but something to be valued.

Luke 7:36-50 (and myriads of other verses!) tells each of us that if you feel you have already cheapened your body and spirit - that God is very willing to give you a new start. That's another CHOICE that you have; a choice to start again and receive an offer - this is an offer from God himself, no one else can give it to you.

On the other side of the coin - the time we spend in our bodies - is limited. And those of you who have frail bodies would understand that our bodies are not perfect.

becoming sharper at study via Christian meditation

Meditation and Study

Many, many years ago, I remember having a friendly argument with a student about "meditation". I was in a neo-conservative-christian-bible-believing phase (one of my many phases) and I understood all meditation to be 'evil' and 'opening yourself up to demons' etc. His argument was that it is scientific also and is a proven way of relaxing and gaining concentration. Well in hindsight, I guess I have to say I was wrong.

When I first went to Bible College, I had an opportunity to do a major study on "Christian Meditation" as a project. So, I immersed myself in many books and lectures old and new and made an amazing discovery = we meditate already, it is natural.

Daydreaming is meditation, thinking about your next holidays is meditation, worrying is a negative form of meditation. We do it anyway.

So what's all this hocus pocus stuff about meditation? And what does it have to do with study?

When you study you need to be in a state of mind to concentrate and not be stressed out of your head - meditation techniques can calm you down and help your mind be in a better place of concentration

Here are the methods common to all sorts of meditation in a nutshell. They come from (gasp!) a non-Christian site Psyblog:
(1)Relax the body and the mind: through controlled breathing, posture, relaxing muscles
(2)Be mindful: don't pass judgement on your thoughts let em go gently pulling em back
(3)Concentrate on something: Often meditators concentrate on their breath
(4)Concentrate on nothing: Most say this can't be achieved without a lot of practice, so I'll say no more about it here. Master the basics first
(5) Zzzzz Zzzzz: That's not meditating, that's sleeping.

But, seeing I'm a Christian - this is where the difference is:
the point of concentration is on Jesus or a Bible truth or Christian prayer.

I'm not a super meditator but usually make time for it when things are getting heavy and full on.
I always ask the Holy Spirit to guide my thoughts at the beginning (because I don't trust my human nature or anything else floating out there) - and when unrelated thoughts or 'things I have to do' pop up in my head, I don't shoo them away - but pray about them because I believe God may be bringing them to my mind to get dealt with.

Also, years ago I gave up the hope of seeing 'rainbow ponys' in the sky or 'streams of light' flooding my soul. It's actually quite lame really. However, I've found that after taking time out to pray and meditate that I often feel better and more focussed to deal with whatever is at hand.
So, if you are stressed out with study - make sure you fit in some time (20 minutes possibly) to get in a better state of mind and body...and spiritually. Then you can say "bring it on!"

Earlier (June 2009) I wrote about my "Casper the friendly ghost" experiences and my understanding of the Bible's view of contacting departed spirits. Today, I received this short article which I found encouraging that there are others who feel the same way as I do about the subject. I'm quoting it direct from Weekly Wisdom Christ notes:

The Bible instructs us not to turn to worldly things for answers. Instead, we are to turn to Jesus, who is the way and the truth and the life (John 14:6). Jesus is not one of the ways; He is the way. You will get real answers to life's difficult questions only from God.
So, instead of spending $3.99 per minute looking for right answers in wrong places, turn to the all-knowing God, himself, the creator of the universe!"

Are you on MySpace, Facebook or another 'social networking' site?
Which side do you stand on - just a bit of fun and self promotion or big brother and cyber crims stealing your identity? Here's a few of my thoughts on the whole 'social networking' thingo - and I stress, my own opinion at the moment. If you have an opinion - I'd be interested to hear it also.

As an introduction, I -am - on Facebook and use it a fair bit mainly to catch up with friends and 'friends' and a lot of mindless fun. I'm also on MySpace - which actually totally horrified a girl I knew. She wasn't aware that, even though I am "mature", I use it to get to know other guitar players and musicians which is a hobby.

I'm currently playing around with Linkedin as a professional tool, but it's early days yet. And for those of you who know that I hang out on the computer a bit - I want you to know for perspective sake, that I still mow lawns, do dishes, vacuum the house, go to a paid job and work and get exercise and (personally) am not an online gamer. I don't play WOW, Call of Duty, or even Hello Kitty's Island Adventures; I'll leave that to other pure pwnage fans.

OK here's my main point: I think in essence social networking is a fantastic way of "networking" with people, getting a bit of perspective into the views and beliefs of others, learning a bit of tolerance, developing social skills and having a bit of fun. However - there are dangers - and it pays to learn about them and to consider all warnings thoughtfully.

First the bad news...and I'm going to only talk about Facebook here...but similar will apply to other networks

Not all people are good - does that surprise you? There are crims out there. Read this article about Facebook cybercrime and viruses

They can be invisible too. Like most crims who don't break in during the daylight - they may find ways into your site through a back door. A personal example of this is a friend of mine had his account hacked. I personally had this'friend' pop up in Chat (real time writing to each other) and he asked "how I was" and after a few preliminaries, this "friend" said that they were "stuck in London and could I send over $800 straight away" because they had "lost a ticket".

I asked my supposive 'friend' (who was using my poor real-friend's hacked legitimate chat and profile photo) a few questions...and then I asked him if he remembered HOW we first met? After being greeted with silence, I explained to this scammer - in words he could clearly understand, and not be mistaken about - what I thought of his little scamming game; and instantly deleted his account. So, yes - it does actually happen. There will always be a percentage of any large group of people, online or offline who have not-so-good intentions about you. So be careful.

You probably already know that you are best to screen what you say and what pictures you allow on your site (if you can help it). I'm told that many employers and human resource companies are getting quite good at roaming the internet for details about you and your online 'private' life to suss you out if you apply for a job.
So, as far as it's up to you - refrain from posting last Fridays drunken binge pix on your site. Also, updates like "my work colleagues are $%#@$%^'s" can get you in an uncomfortable situation or even fired from your part time job.

Finally - assume anything put on the net is public - no matter what you are told.
We all make mistakes - and let me tell, the older we get - the larger the catalogue :(

Facebook has had criticism that it declares that it 'owns' all information on it's site - which the CEO denies (see article in the age ). There is however, encouraging news that Facebook is being pressured in being more open about information it is giving away See Australian IT 28 Aug 09

Back in the old days (I mean about ten years ago) we used to have mainly segmented lives but in the social networking world you can have 'friends' who you wouldn't usually mix with in the real world, so boundaries can get a little blurred sometimes. For example, I have 'friends' who are real long term friends, 'friends' who live overseas and I've never actually met, 'friends' who others would call "clients" from work, 'friends' who are work colleagues, 'friends' who I know from church, 'friends' who I hardly know but somehow we got connected and so on.

For me - and this is what i think is GOOD about online social networking:

It is an unnatural community - yet it is community. I often enjoy the online conversation and remarks people make. I like the interaction. Yes, it's technology, but behind each computer is a human being with all the glory and failings of humanity that we share. It's about people.

As far as it being public - at this stage - besides common sense online precautions (like locking your car in Hindley street), I'm not too worried about the public-ness. If you have nothing to hide, then it's not going to be a big problem. If you stuff up, like we all do - then apologise.

There are many Biblical principles, particularly of love and respect of others that will serve you well online as they do in our normal communities.

moon landing

Moon landing faked......

....so, some people say. Actually, it wasn’t really a fake, but it’s amazing that conspiracy theories still abound. If you look at any YouTube footage of the moon landing, someone often comments that it was staged in a studio or made up. I know many of them are being tongue in cheek, but there are still those who seriously think it was an American propaganda job. If you are one of those, write ‘moon landing hoax myths’ into Google and have a good read (Brief overview here at national geographic). I’d also recommend the YouTube video entitled “moon flaggin” by LunarTuner.

I sometimes find intelligent people writing off Jesus Christ as some sort of hoax or fairy tale as well, without first having looked at the amount of legitimate research around. Ultimately after reading the facts, each person needs to take the leap of faith to be a believer; but it is not based on thin air, there is a large body of work about Christ.

In the book of Acts, this sort of ‘checking the facts to help faith’ attitude is endorsed: “the people in Berea … gladly accepted the message. Day after day they studied the Scriptures to see if these things were true.” (Acts 17 verse 11).

We all have our doubts - but make sure you use your head. You may actually find it supporting your faith.

Hmmm ???
This is a topic which is preceeded by many question marks. It can scare some people, make others scoff and look down their noses, with a 'pity the poor fool' frowns and stares over highly educated half -glasses.

Then there are the rest who just shrug their shoulders and get on with more imporant things like World of Warcraft or the latest online gossip chat.

Spooks, yes...I'm talking about...ghosts.
I'm going out on a limb here a bit - and will give you my opinion - with the subtext that I am allowed to change this very opinion later. But I'm bringing it up for discussion sake.
So before I go on - I will tell you where I stand and then you can either read on, or go back to whatever you were doing.

Do I believe that ghosts exist? Answer: for the majority of stories and accounts - no. Most, I personally believe, are fuelled by strong emotion, hearsay, or more likely fuelled by alcohol, forest-picked mushrooms, or other laboratory made and nightclub ingested substances. However, I do believe that at some point in a number of people's lives, some do come across unexplained encounters that could be catergorised under "ghost" in the library filing cabinet.

One of the reasons I have no problem believing in God and the spiritual realm is because the house I grew up in had some 'strange goings on' every now and then, that can't be explained in an everyday way. As a child, quite frankly, it used to scare the living daylights out of me.

Everyone in my family (except for one of us) had experiences with it. And after our house was sold to someone else, I'm told they also had similar experiences. (spook warning: for those who don't like ghost stories, turn away now...)

Every now and then we would hear soft footsteps walking back and forth down our hallway, up and down, up and down. I used to hide under my bed covers. Of course, a few times we would get brave enough to turn on the light but it stopped and there was no one there. Sometimes (even in daylight) one of the door handles would turn by itself and then suddenly the door would swing open (no wind blowing, it happened on calm days). This was experienced by a few of us in our house. I didn't like that at all. No I didn't.

To this day, I don't have a rational explanation. Over the years I've thought about what it was - is it a deceased person's spirit caught in a house? Is it something demonic playing tricks on poor little wide-eyed and over-imaginative children? Is it a cross over of worlds? I still don't know. Maybe you have your theories?

Well, I'm one for the bottom line and so my question is this - what do we do about it?

Firstly, unlike your favourite TV shows and possibly medium friends tell you - it is not wise to try and communicate with spirit beings.

I know that a number of you will poo-poo this as conservative, blinkered, wowserish and even slightly boring -but from a Christian point of view - we are told only to communicate with God and not any other spirits. Way back when Moses was teaching his people how to live, he told them of God's command "...don't try to use any kind of magic or witchcraft to tell fortunes, or to cast spells or to talk with spirits of the dead. The LORD is disgusted with anyone who does these things..."(Deuteronomy 18:10-11) and this is a reoccuring theme in the Bible.

Secondly, if you find yourself in a situation where you are being invited to deal with the spiritual world and you don't know who it is that you are dealing with - why are you doing it? At least with God, you know that He cares for you and wants the best for you (see Romans 8, John 3 :16 and so on).

I'm no expert - so you need to make up your own mind on this - but other spirits may just be playing around with you at best or actually are looking for your downfall. Use your head. Just as you wouldn't trust people (with skin on) if they haven't proven themselves first - why would you put yourselves into the hands of spirits who you don't know? The Bible tells us that "for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light" (2 Corinthians 11:14) and also "... for our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms" (Ephesians 6: 10 -12 ).

So, what DO you do?

As mysterious and exciting as it may be - for my opinion - stay away from the darkness and draw near to God's light instead.

There is one spirit that we are commanded to let into our lives: The Holy Spirit.
Our God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are always spoken of in terms of Light and Love. We know that God's Spirit loves us and cares for us and wants what is in our best interest. Here are just a few examples:

Titus 3:5 "...he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit..."

Ephesians 5:18-20 (from "The Message" version of The Bible) "Don't drink too much wine. That cheapens your life. Drink the Spirit of God, huge draughts of him. Sing hymns instead of drinking songs! Sing songs from your heart to Christ. Sing praises over everything, any excuse for a song to God the Father in the name of our Master, Jesus Christ".

Galatians 5:22 "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness..."

If you've been involved with the 'dark side' in anyway - bring in the light - always invite the Holy Spirit to fill you everyday and to guide and lead you in his love and truth.

Remember Jesus died on the cross for evey sin and foolish action - there is no sin too great for him to forgive. Come into the light and invite God's Holy Spirit into you. In the old days they used to call him The Holy Ghost. That's the only ghost I'm interested in today.

Who do you think you are ?

From my experience, I've found that the best Career you can get into - is one where you are using your natural God-given gifts and abilities in an area that makes you feel energised, rather than drained. Of course, study, work experience and life experience also play a major role -otherwise you wouldn't be studying.

I started my Career making shock-absorbers for cars on an assembly line for a year. The money was good but I have a very active mind that I have to keep busy - so you can guess how much I loved that job. My work in Universities and a Primary School are a lot more enjoyable and 'down my line' so to speak.

So what's my point? Well - some of you may wonder whether you are doing the right study for the right job and others of you have no doubt. Of course there are shades of gray.

So for you who are wondering and for you who are a little interested, I'm giving you links to free online 'personality tests' as a tool to define or refine "who you think you are" on the assumption that if you are a square block you will be best to fit in a square hole, not a circle.

Have fun with these. A couple ask for an email address; just use your UniSA address.

Remember that these tests will only output what you put in. I tried them and found them fairly accurate. So be honest - who you really are, not what you wish you were!

Personality Test at Team Technology

The results will come up in a myers-briggs format with an explaination. I'm an ENFJ (which I already knew through other tests I'd done years ago) and it came up accurate. Here are what the results look like:

The next one I found fairly accurate is the HumanMetrics Jung test - the bonus is that after the test there is a link which gives you a few brief suggestions of suitable careers - I also found that fairly accurate considering the briefness of the test.

Well you must have landed from outer space if you haven't noticed that the last year has been a financial upheaval for many...and from today ahead there is more to come...

As students, I'd suspect that many of you are not eating caviar by a pool at the moment, so I thought I'd give you a couple of links about Money and what the Bible says.

You hear people say "money can't make you happy" which tells me that those people have never been in a situation where the bills and costs of life far outweigh the means to pay for them. So, I disagree on one count. A certain amount of money -will- make you happier - if you are doing it tough. You need a consistant source of income that meets the basics, so that you can get on with your other life callings and purposes.

However, money is only a tool for trading and nothing more. Forget about status and the dog eat dog side of business. So you can buy new toys? Good for you.

There is even a 'prosperity' side of Christianity that talks up getting rich through the Bible - well, someone forgot to tell Jesus that - he lived on the basics only.

So, perspective with money is very important. And getting the Bible's view on it can be quite freeing from the worlds merry-go-round with money. So, have a look at these links and think and pray about what it might mean for your own life. And if you are struggling financially don't forget to ask God for what you need, it may arrive in a way that money can't buy, so be open to His way of doing things. It might involve money it might not -that's up to God:

Easter

Happy Easter!

Bet you are all looking to a bit of a break - and eating easter eggs and buns (unless you are made of steel), catching up with friends and family maybe? Maybe not?

If you don't have anywhere to go - or you would like to attend a church service over easter - have a look at thses two churches in your area: Magill Lutheran and Mawson Lakes Lutheran.

I personally know both the pastors at Magill Lutheran And Mawson Lakes Lutheran - and they are both good blokes. Magill is slightly more 'conservative' and Mawson Lakes is slightly more 'progressive' but they are both good.

There are also plenty of other Christian churches in both those areas - which I encourage you to check out - but I personally don't know the pastors, or their reputations; so let me know if you go to a good one and I'll promote it.

Not intending going to church this year? Well, at least read this site which is put out by the Autralian Government but I consider to be very good in my humble opinion:

Many people regard Christmas as the high point for Christians but I don't think it was even celebrated by the very early Christians - but Easter always has been. Jesus Christ's death and rising from the dead means two things to us today: our sins, mistakes and stupidity is completely forgiven by God because Jesus died in our place...and Jesus rising from the dead means that one day we will too. We believe that in faith and gives us a great reason to celebrate. Easter is what the whole thing is about.

LSF Commencement Camp

The "Lutheran Students and Friends" (ie you don't have to be Lutheran) commencement camp is on 20 -22 March 2009 at Aldinga Beach. The theme of the camp is "The Butterfly Effect".
They say "Can one more minute in the shower cause a drought, or one smile affect a life? Learn how the butterfly effect works in our lives"

The guest speaker is Dr Garry Dombrosky from Canada.

Mawson Lakes U week day

Howdy Ho

Joined into the travelling roadshow today and set up my table about 10:30 and it was go from there. It was good to meet such a cross section of students and staff. Stephen Trautwein, Fran and Grace helped me out at the table and kept me company so that I didn't have to sit at the table like a solitary fish. The Unilife organisers were great and I appreciate their welcome and assistance.

Personally, I enjoyed meeting the visitors to my table and people on the other tables as well, swapping emails and getting to know each other a bit better.

I had one of "those" awkward moments (later) when I bumped into a gentleman at the bus stop after the event, who had earlier been slightly 'taking the mickey' out of Christianity at my table. We acknowledged each others presence with a "oh, yes, you still exist in the outside world too" nod :)

To those who dropped by and said hello and are now looking here -thanks and hello to you!

LSF Archies church service

"Archies" Lutheran Students and Friends church service is at Immanuel Lutheran Church: 139 Archer Street North Adelaide. It's on first Sunday of every month at 7pm. "Pinkies" cafe from 6pm if you like gold coin donation food.

This morning (Sunday) I gave a brief talk to the good people at Mawson Lakes Community Church about my role at UniSA Mawson Lakes Campus. They were very welcoming. If any of you are new to University, please don't go at it alone - it's not a race like a triathlon to be the first over the line - you are better off hanging around others, asking questions and taking it day by day, finding out where things and the best way to get done what needs doing.

Get to know the UniSA site, particularly the new student bits and pieces. It may seem overwhelming at first but you'll gradually get used to it. Heaps of people have gone through uni and made it out the other end.

There are student groups groups that I will tell you about. The main one I'm connected to is LSF = Lutheran Students and Friends. They are on all uni campuses and meet regularly at different places for fun, spirituality and encouragement.
There will be a commencement camp in March which I hope to get you more info on soon.
